In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to connect Windows For Workgroups 3.11 to the internet with the TCP/IP protocol and a graphical web browser.* You Need Windows For WorkGroups 3.1X for this method!!! You lose all network support when in DOS, unless you have installed a packet driver and a TCP/IP  specifically for use with DOS.

1. What to download:

  • Windows For Workgroups 3.11 compatible network driver for your network card
  • Microsoft TCP/IP 32B can be found on my downloads page.
  • Microsoft Internet Tools 5.01 can be found Here.

2. Preparation

  • In Windows For Workgroups go to the control panel, Windows Setup, options, Change Network Settings.
  • If you haven't already done so, go to Networks... and click the button next to "Install Microsoft Windows Network"

3. Installation of adapter driver

  • Without exiting the "Change Network Settings" box, go to "Drivers".
  • Click Add Adapter.
  • Click "Unlisted or Updated adapter".
  • Click browse.
  • Navigate to wherever you stored your Network Adapter driver
  • Once there, click OK.
  • It should install your adapter.

4. TCP/IP installation

  • Extract TCP32B.ZIP
  • Click "Add Protocol" in the "Change Network Settings" window.
  • Navigate to the directory where you have extracted TCP32B.ZIP.
  • Click OK

5. Installation of Microsoft Internet Tools

  • Run Setup.EXE in Windows For Workgroups 3.11.
  • Go To Control Panel.
  • Click on Internet Options.
  • Disable the Dial Up Wizard if you are on Ethernet, leave it alone and dial if you are not.

*This tutorial assumes that you already have Windows for Workgroups 3.11 installed, it should also work with Windows NT 3.51.

How To Connect To The Internet In Windows 3.1

If you don't have Windows For WorkGroups, this method works with all versions of Windows 3.1x, maybe even 3.0, I don't know. However, it can be a little harder and takes up more memory. This basically sets up networking support in DOS and "ports" it for use with TCP/IP and Windows 3.x.

1. What to download:

  • Packet driver for your network card. Quite a few are on the downloads page.
  • Trumpet Winsock which can be found Here.
  • Microsoft Internet Tools which can be found Here.

-In Windows 3.1 go to the control panel, Windows Setup, options, Change Network Settings.

-If you haven't already done so, go to Networks... and click the button next to "Install Microsoft Windows Network"

3. Installation

-Run the Trumpet Winsock file you downloaded.

-Exit to DOS and set up your packet driver.

-return to Windows and run Setup.EXE from Trumpet Winsock, configure it for use with your packet driver.

-You Are Connected!!!

4. Installation of Microsoft Internet Tools

-Run Setup.EXE in Windows 3.1.

-Go To Control Panel.

-Click on Internet Options.

-Disable the Dial Up Wizard if you are on Ethernet, leave it alone if you are not.
